Humanitarian Michael Capponi’s Work in Haiti

A second floor infinity-edged pool, above the old coffee sorting pits will offer a spectacular view over the bay. The hotel will also feature a Venus Williams tennis academy with its use split between hotel guests and an after-school program for the local kids.

The hotel is scheduled to open in November as the first phase of the project. “Donna Karan loves it. She was walking through here the other day saying ‘I’m picking the colors right now, and the furniture,’” Capponi adds.

Karan is also working with local artisans to develop lines of handicrafts to sell to tourists, as well as exporting to her high end outlets in the U.S.

Michael Capponi is a Key Biscayne, Florida native who grew up to become an established Miami Beach nightclub promoter and real estate developer. He’s currently collaborating with well-known celebrities such as Venus Williams, Wyclef Jean and Donna Karan in an attempt to reconstruct the Caribbean nation of Haiti. Haiti is still suffering from the devastating effects of a 2010 earthquake that hit the southern portion of the country. Roughly 250,000 people passed away due to the earthquake.

Capponi was moved deeply by the earthquake. He traveled to the nation with a relief team merely days after the catastrophe happened. The team consisted of many firemen and physicians. Capponi was deeply changed by his time in Haiti post-earthquake. Although he already had an extensive history in humanitarian projects, being in Haiti after the quake proved to be extremely profound for him. He’s returned to Haiti more than 30 times since his trip at the beginning of 2010.
